Genetic Improvement:
Breed development and genetic improvement is achieved through Breedplan which gives cattle an Estimated Breeding Value or EBV. This describes the genetic potential of the animal for all the important traits such as calving value, growth rate, muscle score etc.
In spite of competition from other breeds the Northern Ireland Charolais still holds the lead in performance and conformation. eg. Northern Ireland bulls took the supreme championship at Perth in February 2007 and October 2007. A Northern Ireland bull took the breed championship and the Interbreed Beef Performance award at the Highland Show and the Interbreed Beef Performance award at the Royal Ulster Show at Balmoral in 2007.
Commercial Charolais calves dominated the prices at the suckled calf sales and the supreme champion and the calf champion at Allams Christmas sale at Balmoral in 2007 were Charolais.
The females were also in the limelight when the NI Shows Association/ Ulster Bank Beef Cow of the Year for 2007 and the reserve were both Charolais.
