Charolais Reign Supreme

  • Wednesday, 05 October 2011 16:47

The large indoor arena was buzzing for one of the most successful National Charolais shows in years; 14 years to be exact since this show began in the Ecclesville Equestrian Centre in the secluded village of Fintona in County Tyrone.

Who would ever dream of such a specular show of almost 100 Charolais cattle been shown in the large arena on a Friday evening. Judges Fiona and Bob Temple were extremely impressed with the lineup of Charolais cattle and the enthusiasm of the young breeders who had come along to compete in the Young Handler Competition.

From early morning exhibitors were preparing their animals to ensure that they looked their very best. It is a very competitive show giving the Charolais club another opportunity to showcase excellent pedigree and commercial Charolais stock.

Mrs Fiona & Mr Bob Temple from the well-known Rumsden Herd, at Steep Rd Jarvis Brook East Sussex had travelled to the province early on Friday morning to judge the classes and championships of both Pedigree & Commercial stock and the Young handler competitions.

Charolais and proud of it!
The judging began with Mrs Temple in the show ring for the Animax Young Handler Competition which began at 4.30pm; there was a great entry in the under 17 years age group making it a difficult choice, but in the end an absolutely overwhelmed Caoimhe McGovern of the Ratoary herd was placed first followed closely by her sister Eimear McGovern in second place.

In the 17 yrs to 21 yrs age group it was a close call with four more experienced competitors exhibiting their skills in the show ring where both competitors and animals were exceptionally well groomed. Alan Burleigh from the Derryharney Herd was placed first with Clodagh McGovern again from the Ratoary herd in second place.

The first and second placed from both classes competed for the overall Champion Young Handler and Alan Burleigh took the coveted title of NI Charolais Champion Young Handler 2011 followed by Caoimhe McGovern in reserve place. This is the second year of the competition at Fintona and it is now firmly on the calendar with Sam Thompson Business Development Officer for NI stated that Animax were delighted to present the club with a new cup for the Champion Young Handler. The numbers of young people involved leads us to believe that both the Charolais Club and the Charolais breed have a secure future in the region.

Mr Bob Temple entered the ring for the fifteen Pedigree and Commercial classes and

made light work of the task in hand, most classes had good entries and spectators commented on the quality of the animals on show throughout the evening.

In the pedigree section there were five classes for bulls and six classes for heifers followed by the Commercial section with four classes including junior commercial steer and junior female followed by male and female suckled calf classes.

The Commercial Championships were sponsored this year again by Fane Valley and they were not disappointed with the result; K C Veitch’s herd took the championship with a superb animal and Alan and Kenneth Veitch were presented with the McAllister Trophy, with Jack Smyth taking the reserve place in the commercial section of the show.

Followed by the BCCS championships; Junior Intermediate and Senior Female Championships were hotly contested with spectators waiting to see which

animals would come to contest the Supreme Female Championship. The overall Supreme

Female title went to an exceptional heifer Glencoe Elegance sired by Ashleigh Victor,

owned by Mrs Valerie McDonald and the McDonald family was presented with the Omagh District Council Desmond Anderson Cup presented by council Chairman Mr Frankie Donnelly. The reserve champion was to Ratoary Floss sired by Simpsons Gregg and owned by Sean McGovern Clogher.

This was followed by the Junior Intermediate and Senior Male Championships, drawing out the best of the classes to compete for the coveted title of overall Supreme Male Champion which went to Aughafad Foreman sired by the well-known Sportsman Columbo with a homebred dam Aughafad Carla owned by RH Sinnamon & Sons who were presented with the Robert Scott Shield by Martin Donaghy British Society Chairman.

The reserve champion went to Woodpark Fortknox ET sired by Corrie Alan and owned by Will Short of Beragh.

The commentator for the evening was Mr Adam Breen who had a busy stint on the microphone, with assistance from stewards and officials. Adam introduced and thanked the many sponsors who attended the show to present the winning rosettes and trophies.

Mr Martin Donaghy club member and chairman of the British Society proposed a vote of thanks to all who had worked so hard to make the show such a success and especially thanked all the exhibitors for presenting their animals so professionally.
