A capacity attendance enjoyed the largest ever turnout of both pedigree and commercial Charolais at the NI National Charolais Show at Fintona, which gave the judges an arduous task at this wonderful spectacle.
The fine autumn weather added to the warm atmosphere and magnificent view of the spectacular cream colour of almost 150 Charolais cattle against the green mature trees, blue skies and picturesque parkland of the Ecclesville Centre at Fintona last Friday afternoon.
The event commenced with the first ever Young Handlers Competition, with young people proudly displaying their animals in true colours. Albert Connolly had a difficult task deciding the winners, ably assisted by son David and daughter Maggie McQuiston who gave an excellent commentary on the proceedings.
After much deliberation, the winner of the class 12-17 years went to Eimear McGovern, Fintona from the Ratoary Herd, who has been handling cattle from a very young age, second place went to Alan Burleigh, from the Derryharney herd.
The second class 18-21 years, also went to the McGovern Family, Clodagh took home the winning rosette, with Nicole Hughes coming a close second. The overall champion of the young handlers event went to Eimear McGovern with Alan Burleigh coming a close reserve. Sandra Cochrane Chairperson of NI Charolais Club commented “Twenty two young people participated and this is testimony of the interest young people have in Charolais cattle and becoming involved in the handling of animals within the Charolais Club. This is the beginning of what could become a major event in its own right. I would like to thank Albert Connolly and family for helping to organise this event for our young people”
